Vanadium Flow Battery (FlowBattery)

Class: FlowBattery | Module: energysim.models.storage | Validation benchmarks | Units

Overview

Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB).

Decoupled power (stack MW) and energy (tank MWh) with load-dependent pump parasitics. Round-trip stack efficiency is split symmetrically (sqrt(eta) on charge and discharge). SoC is limited to [0.02, 0.98] by scaling the request, so SoC integrates exactly what the stack exchanged.

Parameters

Parameter Type Default Unit Description
name str 'VRFB' - Unique component name identifier
stack_p_max_mw float 1.0 MW -
tank_capacity_mwh float 6.0 MWh -
soc_init float 0.5 1 Initial state of charge fraction of the electrolyte
stack_efficiency float 0.85 - -
pump_base_loss_kw float 10.0 kW -
pump_var_loss_kw float 30.0 kW -
step_size float 1.0 s -

Inputs

Variable Unit Description
P_cmd MW Active power setpoint (positive = charge, negative = discharge)

Outputs

Variable Unit Description
P_actual MW Net active power delivered to or absorbed from the grid
SoC 1 Current electrolyte state of charge fraction
P_parasitic_kW kW -

Validity and notes

Validity: an energy-bucket model; no electrolyte imbalance, crossover or temperature dependence. P_actual is the grid-side power including pump parasitics (positive = import).

Usage example

from energysim import world
from energysim.models import FlowBattery

sim = world(start_time=0, stop_time=3600, t_macro=900)
sim.add_model('flowbattery', model=FlowBattery(), outputs=['P_actual', 'SoC', 'P_parasitic_kW'], step_size=60)
res = sim.simulate()
print(res['flowbattery'].tail(2))
